On Sunday, January 16, 1916, a Presbytery composed of Rev. J. P. Hagaman and deacons, F. P. Brittain and F. E. Cooke of Mt. Home Baptist Church, met at Mull's Grove Baptist Church for the purpose of organizing the Burkemont Baptist Church.  A part of the membership of the Mull's Grove Church organized this new church.  Letters were presented by members of other churches and read.  The record says that there were eighteen charter members.  The annual income at the end of the first year was $32.62.Land was secured from Mr. and Mrs. Molton Brittain for the location of the new church.  Framing and nails were given for the new building.  The men of the community hauled rocks in wagons for the pillars of the new church building which was a one-room building.  The church bell, which is still used by the church, was bought in 1917.  It was brought from the depot in a wagon by Ernest Poteat.Rev. J. P. Hagaman was the first pastor.  Others are as follows:  The Revs. M. I. Harris, W. H. Walker, F. A. Bower, W. B. Sprinkle, M. G. Cloer, J. E. Hill, H. S. Benfield, L. E. Snipes, W. H. A growing church demanded a new building, and in 1948-1949, a brick structure was built with classrooms in the basement.  The first service held in it was on August 28, 1949.  The church voted to call a full-time pastor.  On March 18, 1951, Rev. Johnny Tiller was called to serve in that position.  At that time, the church had 326 members with an annual income of $19,592.

The following years witnessed continued growth and success which has been far reaching in the life of the community.  In November of 1953, construction started on the educational wing of the church.  It was first used on Mother's Day, May 9, 1954.  With growth continuing, another P8220350

educational building was dedicated on June 6, 1965.

The church continued to grow as the community and surrounding areas increased in population.  In December of 1971, Rev. Robert Tenery was called to serve as pastor.  The church at that time had a membership of 865 and an annual income of $63,272.  As growth occurred, another building program was launched in 1975.  On Sunday, January 28, 1976, a beautiful new auditorium was dedicated.  Since that time the old auditorium has become the Choir Suite.

Growth at Burkemont continued, and vision and horizons expanded.  The sights of the Burkemont family were now set on much needed educational space, larger fellowship hall and activity areas for the entire family.  In 1988, vision became reality as the Burkemont family dedicated its new Family Life Center.

In October, 1991, the church called Dr.  Marshall (Mark) Pridgen, Jr. as pastor.  Under his leadership, the church called four additional full-time ministers:  Rev. Clude Murray, Jr., Rev. Preston Stainback, Rev. Bill Holland, and Rev. Eddy Butnon, Jr., as well as Rev. Harold Sprinkle as Support Pastor.  This multiple staff has led the church in two a.m. worship services and two a.m. Sunday Schools, as well as a Wednesday evening School of Discipleship.  In May, 2000, the church entered into a $1 million plan of new construction and renovations.  These renovations, among other things, added corridors on either side of the sanctuary which houses our Media Center and Welcome Center.

In the Spring of 2004, Pastor Pridgen answered God's call to serve in another church, and in April, Rev. Al Tinnin was called to serve as Interim Pastor.

In May, 2005, the church called Dr. David E. Mills as pastor.  December, 2005, the church called Rev. Philip Long as Minister of Music; and in December, 2006, Rev. Brian Skeggs was called as Minister of Education and Administration.  In May of 2008 Rev. Bill Holland retired after 10 years of service at Burkemont.  In March of 2009, Rev. Dustin Scott was called as the new Minister of Children and Families.

We would love for you to be our guest in one of our Three Worship services & Sunday School Classes.  We are here ready to serve you and your famliy.
